Pharmacy in Wales
In November 2007 there were 2,346 pharmacists working in Wales in a variety
of ways:
- More than 1,200 work in the community. An estimated
100,000 people in Wales visit a community pharmacy for a health related
matter every day
- Some 350 work in hospitals
- Others work with GPs providing prescribing advice
- Pharmacists work at the heart of pharmaceutical science,
helping to create the medicines of the future
- In education - training pharmacists of the future
Pharmacists are experts in medicines. Their special knowledge
and skill is an under utilised resource and the Welsh Pharmacy Board is working
to ensure that it is put to greater use for the people of Wales.
- Some £6m of medicines are returned, unused, to Welsh
pharmacies every year
- Many people in Wales are suffering the health consequences
of smoking, drug misuse or unwanted pregnancy, when proven help is available
- As many as a half of all patients with chronic conditions
in Wales use their medicines ineffectively
- Between 6% and 10% of hospital admissions in Wales are
caused by problems with medicines
- Every day, thousands of people wait to see their GP
for minor illnesses which could be managed with the help and advice of a
pharmacist
- Care workers in residential and nursing homes feel vulnerable
when supervising clients' medication
