Suspected side effects to swine flu antiviral medicines can now be reported to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) via a new dedicated webpage (www.mhra.gov.uk/swineflu).
The online system is based on the highly successful Yellow Card Scheme and is designed to make completing a report quick and easy for the public as well as healthcare professionals. This will assist the MHRA in efficiently monitoring the safety of the swine flu antiviral medicines, Tamiflu and Relenza, as their use increases during the swine flu pandemic.
MHRA Director of Vigilance and Risk Management of Medicines, Dr June Raine, said Tamiflu and Relenza are acceptably safe and most people will not suffer any side effects.

The Department of Health have today published the Pharmacy Order Consultation Report http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Consultations/Responsestoconsultations/DH_100891
Thisis a critical step as the Order will establish the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) which will be the new regulator for Great Britain’s pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy premises in 2010. A total of 195 full responses were received to the consultation as well as specific responses to the issues of restricted titles and non-practising register.
Key issues in the consultation report include:
The draft Pharmacy Order now has to be finalised before it is laid in the Scottish and Westminster Parliaments. The next stages will include the Constitution Order, which will give the detail of the composition of the Council, and completion of the work which has begun to develop the rules and standards of the GPhC under the Order. The Society will have the opportunity to comment on the Constitution Order and the rules and standards once they are published for consultation.

Pharmacists in West Wales have joined forces with GPs and their Loal Health Boards in launching a campaign to reduce the amount of wasted medicine. Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire LHBs are leading the initiative as health chiefs reveal wasted unwanted medicine is costing the NHS in West Wales £1.5 million a year.
Welsh Pharmacy Board member, Richard Evans gave several interviews to highlight how important it is for patients to speak to their pharmacist before stopping a medicine, and to only order what they need on repeat prescription.
In a move that represents one of the most significant changes ever seen in the leadership of the pharmacy profession, the Transitional Committee has published The New Professional Body for Pharmacy - the Prospectus, the culmination of an extensive open and independent consultation process involving thousands of individuals and their organisations.
The prospectus is available in both English and Welsh - click here to view
