For those members of the Library who do not have access to myLibrary, we have provided below information about the types of resources available to you when you visit the Library, and some of the services we provide through which you can access the same resources even if you are unable to visit the Library in person.

Journals

The Library subscribes to over 250 journals in print covering all aspects of pharmacy practice and research. Over 60 of these titles are also available online from the PCs within the Library.

However, there are a large number of titles of relevance to pharmacy that are either open access or freely available to all on the internet. The majority of these are listed below:

These journals have been selected as the most relevant titles from several directories of open access journals free online which focus on medical and health-related titles. Select a link below to access and search a directory in its entirety.

Free information on the internet

The Library has collated good quality, authoritative information resources in the subject of pharmacy on its Finding pharmacy information on the internet pages.

Use these resources to find free information on the Internet. If there are resources you use which you think should appear in this list, please let us know. We welcome suggestions.

Bibliographic databases

To make the most effective use of journal and research literature you will want to be able to search quickly and efficiently the content of journals and other such literature without scanning each journal individually. Bibliographic databases allow you to do just this.

Subscription databases available in the Library

The Library subscribes to six databases which are accessible from PCs within the Library:

RPS e-PIC - indexes articles from key pharmacy and medical journals. It covers all aspects of pharmacy, including pharmacy practice, management and current research in both community and hospital contexts. The database provides a full citation, abstract and keywords for each article indexed, and is fully searchable by specific fields or through a free text search.

International Pharmaceutical Abstracts - produced by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, it indexes 750 titles in pharmacy and medicine from around the world, and includes all U.S. state pharmacy journals. As such it complements RPS e-PIC. It includes journals articles and all conference papers presented at ASHP's major meetings. As with RPS e-PIC it covers all aspects of pharmacy and is fully searchable.

AMED Allied and Complementary Medicine - includes relevant references to articles from around 512 journals, the majority of which are in English. A large number of these titles are not indexed by any other biomedical sources. As well as the basic bibliographic information, each record includes index terms using the AMED Thesaurus and an abstract summarizing the article being cited.

Cinahl - the authoritative source of information for the professional literature of nursing, seventeen allied health disciplines, biomedicine, and healthcare, it provides references to books, book chapters, pamphlets, audiovisual items, dissertations, educational software, selected conference proceedings, standards of professional practice, nurse practice acts, critical paths, and research instruments.

Medline - includes access to SilverPlatter MEDLINE In-Process & Other non-Indexed Citations plus access to SERFILE - bibliographic information for over 80,000 biomedical and health science serials. This database is updated weekly with more than 520,000+ records added annually.

Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database - provides evidence-based, clinical information on natural medicines. It contains information about thousands of products including information about ingredient or brand name, level of effectiveness and potential interactions.

Databases available free on the internet

In addition to these there are several free, high quality databases available on the internet, which we would recommend using if you are unable to visit the Library in person. Most index more than just journal literature. The key resources include:

PubMed - a service of the US National Library of Medicine that includes over 16 million citations from MEDLINE and other life science journals. It includes articles dating back to the 1950s. Use it to find links to full text articles, conference proceedings and official publications. While the focus of the database is North American literature, it does contain a lot of information from the UK and around the world and therefore is an excellent general resource.

TRIP Database - described as the internet's leading resource for evidence-based practice and medicine (EBM), the TRIP (Turning Research Into Practice) database allows 'users to easily and rapidly identify the highest quality evidence from a wide range of sources'. Use it to locate evidence-based resources including articles, patient information leaflets, medical images, online guidance from Prodigy, SIGN, etc. and other useful websites. The site also provides links to other evidence-based resources and an introduction to evidence-based medicine and practice.

Cochrane Library- a collection of databases that contain high–quality, independent evidence to inform healthcare decision-making, Cochrane reviews represent the highest level of evidence on which to base clinical treatment decisions. Includes the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, a source of reliable and up-to-date information on the effects of interventions in healthcare, that promotes the search for evidence in the form of clinical trials and other studies of interventions. Use it to locate up-to-date evidence-based information to inform best practice.
